I am reminded of the 1957 novel [and there was also a film].
Of course the author was a hero of the Irish republican struggle: he was in the GPO in 1916.

Brian,
Nevil Shute’s father was head of the General Post Office in Ireland in 1916.
The Nevil Shute who wrote On The Beach is said to have been commended for gallantry as a stretcher bearer during the Easter Rising (was he a ‘neutral’ acting under the Red Cross?), and served in the Second World War as an officer in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve designing naval weapons.
This is true. It was a little joke of mine. Nevil Shute Norway was indeed in the GPO in 1916. bjg
