Cara/Brian. Would this person, be Richard De Burgh or is De Bourgho a definition of that name. The reason i ask is that on the opening of the Limerick and Ennis Railway in 1850, one of the locos used by the contractor, William Dargan, was named Sir Richard De Burgh, no such loco name or person has yet been traced, so given your posting here, i wonder were they one and the same. We have no idea what the loco was as used, but it might be it was just a special naming to mark the occasion, it appeared i think in the Clare Vindicator newspaper given the opening day. Regards. Andrew.

  3. Hi Andrew, a couple of extra clues:

‘Sir Richard De Bourgho, Bart, of Castle-Connell, abjured the Church of Rome, and embraced the Protestant faith at Castletownroche Church, county Cork, on Sunday day se’nnight.’— Limerick Chronicle. (Cork Examiner, 1 July 1844)

MARRIAGE IN HIGH LIFE The marriage of Sir Richard De Bourgho. Bart., of Castleconnell, and Miss Catherine Brasier, youngest daughter of the late Brooke Brasier, Esq., of Mitchelsfort, county Cork, and Rivers, county Limerick. was solemnized on Thursday the 8th inst. The Venerable the Archdeacon of Cork officiated the ceremony. A select circle of relatives and friends was present on the interesting occasion, including Lord Allen. Sir Lucius and Lady O’Brien, Miss Wader, Mr. and Mrs. Otway Cave, of Castle Otway ; Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell, Mr. Bourne, Mrs. O’Brien, of Cratloe, county Clare ; H. Jephson, Esq., &c. fee. At the conclusion of the ceremony the bridal party returned to Milchelsforl, the children of the schools strewing the path with flowers, where a sumptuous dejeuner was prepared, of which the company partook. Soon afterwards the happy pair entered their carriage, and set off on a tour for ales. The tenantry of Sir Richard De Bourghu in the villages of Castleconnell and O’Brien’s Bridge, exerted themselves to manifest their affecion and respect on this occasion, having, among other demonstrations, erected several beautiful arches, decorated with choice flowers and wedding favors, and bearing appropriate inscriptions. These villages were the theatres of fesiivity and dancing, whilst the poor were munificently feasted, and otherwise made the recipients of the bounty of the youthful bridegroom.’
