   With automated lock gates/sluices, I cannot see why a central point of control, backed up by a smaller team on the ground would not work. It works for Irish Lights and also for the ESB hydro electric stations (controlled from Turlough Hill).

   Indeed. Most of the Shannon locks do not, as far as I know, have resident lockkeepers. bjg
