Broharris and Ballykelly

I have revised and expanded my page on the Broharris Canal, distinguishing between it and the Ballykelly Canal. However, there are still mysteries, and I will welcome comments from anyone who can cast light on the two subjects.

Another turf canal system

Here is a short page about a canal system I had not heard of before today. It was a network of turf canals, with a sea lock, on the estate of Scotts of Willsborough, near Eglinton, on Lough Foyle; the Scotts supplied [London]Derry with turf and, like James Macnab at Portcrusha, reclaimed the land from the bog.

Eeyore’s Gloomy Place

Here is an article, perhaps by Philip Dixon Hardy himself, from his Dublin Penny Journal of 1835. It is about the Bog of Allen, and the turfcutters living thereon, seen from the Grand Canal in 1835.

He visited a turfcutter’s hovel in the bog while stopped at a double lock about twenty miles from Dublin. What lock could that have been?

Note that Kildare is not among the counties mentioned in the article.
